Police Issue Road Safety Alert as Schools Reopen for Third Term

The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has issued a nationwide alert, calling for heightened vigilance on the roads as students return to school for the third term of the 2026 academic year.

Police anticipate a significant surge in traffic volume around school vicinities, major highways, and busy thoroughfares. This increase poses a greater risk of accidents involving children.

Speaking on Monday, Directorate spokesperson Michael Kananura emphasized the need for reduced speed in school zones and near pedestrian crossings. He urged drivers to avoid reckless behavior, dangerous overtaking, and any form of distracted driving. “Do not drive as if you own the road; drive as if you own the car,” Kananura advised, stressing that road safety is a collective responsibility.

Motorists have also been cautioned against driving under the influence of alcohol and other traffic offenses that could endanger students and other road users. Parents and school administrators are tasked with ensuring that children travel in safe, properly maintained, and authorized vehicles, driven by qualified and licensed personnel, and are not overloaded.

Schools are further encouraged to conduct road safety education for students and to manage pick-up and drop-off points effectively to prevent congestion and potential accidents. Learners have been advised to utilize designated pedestrian crossings, remain attentive while walking, and to thoroughly check for oncoming traffic before crossing.

In areas lacking walkways, pedestrians are instructed to walk facing oncoming traffic and to exercise extreme caution when crossing roads. “There is no journey that is more important than a child’s life,” Kananura stated, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

The traffic directorate calls for patience and responsibility from all road users to ensure the safety of children during this period, highlighting that protecting young lives is a shared commitment.
