The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has initiated a significant mobilization drive in the Busoga sub-region, commencing with a signature collection campaign aimed at bolstering support for its chairman, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba. This effort is a key component of a nationwide campaign targeting over 20 million signatures in anticipation of the 2031 presidential elections.
The campaign officially launched in Jinja City, drawing a substantial crowd of PLU leaders, local politicians, Members of Parliament, and supporters from across the Busoga region. Organizers have set an ambitious goal of collecting more than one million signatures specifically from Busoga, underscoring the region’s perceived importance in demonstrating grassroots support for Muhoozi’s anticipated presidential bid.
Daudi Kabanda, Head of the Office of the PLU Chairman, urged the residents of Busoga to rally behind Muhoozi, characterizing him as a leader capable of aligning Ugandan aspirations with a vision for a prosperous future. He emphasized that the nationwide campaign aims to showcase the extent of Muhoozi’s support and mobilize the electorate effectively.
PLU’s Director of Mobilisation, Michael Mawanda, highlighted the transition from discussion to action, calling for intensified efforts to spread the message across the country. The initiative plans to reach every village within the Busoga sub-region, with coordinators tasked to ensure broad participation. Samuel Nabeta, the PLU Busoga Coordinator, expressed confidence in reaching the one-million-signature target for the region, detailing that achieving approximately 270 signatures per village would fulfill this goal.
Several political figures in the region have publicly declared their support for Muhoozi’s presidential aspirations. Jinja District Woman MP Peace Tibyaze cited a belief in leadership continuity as her reason for endorsing Muhoozi, aiming to build on existing progress and address ongoing challenges. The PLU is positioned as the political platform for consolidating this support, with a strong emphasis on grassroots engagement.
The launch event was attended by various dignitaries, including MPs, former ministers, local government officials, and security personnel, signaling a broad-based support for the initiative. The campaign is set to continue its outreach throughout Busoga, focusing on community engagement to meet its signature collection targets.
