Musomi App Launched to Enhance Online Tutoring for Ugandan Students

Parents in Uganda seeking supplementary education for their children now have a new digital solution with the launch of Musomi App. The platform addresses the common frustrations of finding trustworthy tutors, especially amidst an increasingly pressured education system facing challenges like overcrowded classrooms and curriculum shifts.

Frustrated by informal tutoring arrangements that lacked accountability and quality assurance, entrepreneur Reagan Kawuma, in collaboration with Dr. John Lubaale, developed Musomi.app. The app aims to provide a secure and effective online space for students to receive academic support while creating visibility and earning potential for qualified tutors.

The Musomi App distinguishes itself through a multi-layered vetting process for its tutors. Applicants must submit academic credentials, which are independently verified. Minimum requirements include a Uganda Certificate of Education and relevant subject qualifications, with diplomas or degrees necessary for secondary and A-level tutoring, respectively. Beyond academic qualifications, competency and communication skills are assessed, with ongoing monitoring through student and caregiver reviews.

To ensure quality and accountability, each tutoring session booked through the app is tracked and reviewed. Tutors are encouraged to provide post-session summaries detailing topics covered and areas for further practice. An in-app assessment module allows for custom quizzes, and administrators can remotely supervise sessions to maintain standards.

The platform initially targets students from Primary Four to Senior Six in Uganda’s central urban region, focusing on Kampala and surrounding areas due to higher smartphone penetration and demand. Session fees are tutor-set, with prices starting affordably at Shs 10,000, payable via mobile money. Musomi retains a small service fee, with tutors receiving the remainder upon reaching a withdrawal threshold.

While Uganda currently lacks specific regulations for online supplementary education, Musomi is actively engaging with the Ministry of Education and Sports. The developers emphasize their role as a complement to the formal education system and express commitment to meeting future standards.

Musomi.app is built on a stable cloud-based infrastructure, designed for reliability even on slower internet connections, and offers technical support for users. The app’s development involved extensive consultation with parents, tutors, and students to ensure it effectively addresses the identified problems in supplementary education.
