Masaka High Court Secures as Election Petition Hearings Commence

Masaka High Court was abuzz with activity and heightened security on Monday, September 14, as judicial proceedings commenced for several election petitions. These cases challenge the outcomes of recent parliamentary elections across the Greater Masaka region. The increased security presence was a direct response to the considerable number of supporters from different political factions who had converged outside the court premises, eager to witness the start of the hearings.

Supporters were observed gathering outside the court, anticipating the appearance of their candidates. Security personnel were strategically deployed to ensure order and prevent any clashes between rival groups. While the atmosphere was tense, a brief scuffle involving vehicles occurred as supporters attempted to follow developments closely.

The court proceeded to formally handle and begin the reading of petitions filed by candidates dissatisfied with the declared election results. Among the cases presented was one by Veronica Nanyondo, who contested the Bukomansimbi District Woman MP seat. She has petitioned against her challenger, Ruth Katushabe, and the Electoral Commission, alleging electoral malpractices that she believes cost her the victory.

Another significant petition was brought forth by Hajji Muhammad Kateregga of JEEMA, challenging the election of Bukomansimbi North MP Salim Kiseka of the NRM. Kateregga alleges intimidation of voters and harassment of his agents marred Kiseka’s win.

The court also addressed a petition concerning the election of Yusuf Kiruruuta Nkerettanyi of the National Unity Platform (NUP) in a case filed by former minister Vicente Bamulangaki Ssempijja, who alleges irregular victory and issues with the election’s conduct.

These legal challenges represent a shift from the political arena to the courtroom, where evidence and arguments will determine the validity of the contested results. The High Court’s decisions will be crucial in establishing whether alleged irregularities affected the outcomes and what consequences, if any, will follow.
