ICPAU Urges CPA Students to Shun Gossip, Embrace Accountability

The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) is calling on students pursuing their Certified Public Accountant (CPA) qualifications to foster a culture of professionalism and personal responsibility. In a recent address during the release of the August 2026 examination results, ICPAU Chief Executive Officer Derick Nkajja urged students to concentrate on their studies and avoid engaging in gossip or casting blame when faced with examination setbacks.

Nkajja highlighted that professional accounting courses demand significant discipline, commitment, and a steadfast focus on professionalism. He noted that examinations are crucial for ensuring only competent individuals enter the accountancy profession. The CEO observed a concerning trend of students deflecting responsibility for poor performance, instead resorting to gossip and blaming external factors.

“Professionalism requires individuals to be accountable, take ownership of their responsibilities and acknowledge their mistakes rather than shifting blame to others,” Nkajja stated. He encouraged those who did not pass to use the results as a reflective tool, identifying areas for improvement in their preparation and study techniques rather than pointing fingers.

The August 2026 examination diet saw 6,711 scripts presented, with 2,281 candidates achieving passes. While pass rates improved in Levels 1 and 4, Level 2 experienced a notable decline. Examiners’ reports identified common weaknesses among candidates, including inadequate preparation, difficulties in applying technical knowledge, poor examination techniques, and challenges in interpreting questions. ICPAU encourages students to review examiner comments and engage with support activities offered by the institute to enhance their performance.
