Suspects Nabbed in Soroti Number Plate Theft Ring

Authorities have apprehended multiple suspects in a crackdown on a criminal enterprise targeting vehicle number plates in Soroti City. The operation, which involves extortion of motorists, has seen arrests made in Mbarara, Kole, and Lira districts.

East Kyoga Regional Police Commander Ibrahim Saiga confirmed the arrests, stating that the police are actively investigating the alleged criminal network. One individual arrested in Mbarara is accused of registering a phone number used by the perpetrators to demand ransom from victims. This suspect has already appeared in court in Soroti.

Further arrests were made in Kole District and the city of Lira, indicating a widespread operation. Mr. Saiga emphasized that preliminary findings suggest a highly organized criminal activity with multiple accomplices. The police are committed to identifying and apprehending all individuals involved in this scheme.

Motorists are urged by the police to officially report instances of stolen number plates, rather than solely focusing on recovery. Such formal reports are crucial for linking cases and dismantling criminal networks. Several recovered number plates remain unclaimed at police stations in Soroti.

One victim, the Mayor of Soroti City West Division, John Enomu, detailed his experience of having his number plate stolen and a note left demanding Shs120,000 for its return. After paying Shs80,000 initially, he was compelled to pay the full amount before being directed to a hidden location to retrieve his plate.

Local security agencies are reportedly holding meetings to devise strategies to combat these thefts and have warned that perpetrators will face severe legal consequences. The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities as the investigation continues.
