Policewoman Arrested After Accusing Kampala Commanders of Corruption

A corporal from Kasangati police station has been arrested for alleged scandalous behavior after posting a video accusing senior Kampala Metropolitan Police commanders of improperly releasing a suspect who had assaulted her. Corporal Fatina Mukolerwa, a police officer attached to the child and family protection unit at Kasangati, has found herself in trouble with the law after making serious accusations against her superiors. In a widely circulated social media video, Mukolerwa alleged that senior commanders within the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) ordered the release of a suspect who had been arrested for assaulting and biting her.

Mukolerwa stated that the suspect, Sylvia Arinaitwe, was being investigated for domestic violence. The corporal claimed that during the arrest, Arinaitwe resisted, became violent, and bit her hands. Mukolerwa further alleged that while at the station, Arinaitwe made threats and contacted an influential brigadier, who then allegedly pressured KMP commander ACP Ezekiel Ebapu Emitu to order the suspect’s release.

Adding to her distress, Mukolerwa revealed she was undergoing post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) due to concerns about potential HIV infection from the bite. She expressed disappointment with her commanders for what she perceived as an irregular release, especially given Arinaitwe’s alleged history of violence.

However, KMP deputy spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire has refuted Mukolerwa’s claims of an irregular release. Owoyesigyire confirmed the arrest and the ensuing scuffle, as well as a subsequent confrontation at the station. He explained that the suspect was bonded out after police determined that children were left unattended during the arrest. Arinaitwe reportedly claimed her husband was using the case to evict her and sell their property.

Owoyesigyire stated that Mukolerwa’s conduct and the circumstances of the incident are under investigation. He also reminded police officers to use official channels for grievances rather than social media, labeling Mukolerwa’s video as inappropriate.
