Kijanangoma Promises Open Palace and Development for Tooro Kingdom

Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, recently named successor to the Tooro throne, has outlined a vision for his reign centered on inclusivity and progress. Following rituals at the Karambi Royal Tombs for the late King Oyo, Kijanangoma stated that his potential ascension is not just for the Babiito clan but for all people of Tooro. He emphasized a commitment to healing divisions and rekindling public engagement with cultural events, particularly the Empango celebrations, which he recalled were vibrant during the era of his grandfather, King Kaboyo.

Kijanangoma highlighted Tooro’s significant tourism potential as a key area for development, pledging to mobilize support and forge partnerships to leverage these attractions for the kingdom’s benefit. His background in the media industry, he stated, would be instrumental in lobbying for necessary resources and collaborations. He also promised to continue and expand upon projects initiated by the late King Oyo, including educational scholarships and the development of kingdom-owned social services.

A cornerstone of his pledge is an “open palace” policy, inspired by his grandfather King Rukidi III, where subjects would be welcome. Kijanangoma expressed a desire to strengthen intra-family and inter-clan relationships, proposing regular gatherings to foster unity and collaboration. He intends to be an active monarch, frequently engaging with his subjects rather than remaining secluded within the palace walls.

However, Kijanangoma’s path to the throne remains contested, with the immediate royal family opposing his endorsement by the Babiito succession committee. The finality of his coronation is thus uncertain amidst this ongoing dispute.
