Manchester City secured a crucial 1-0 victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford, despite playing with ten men for a significant portion of the match. The decisive moment came in the second half when star striker Erling Haaland found the back of the net.
The match took a significant turn midway through the first half when City’s Phil Foden received a red card. Foden was dismissed for kicking out at Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes while on the ground, leaving City a man down.
United looked to capitalize on their numerical advantage. They came close to scoring on multiple occasions, hitting the woodwork twice. Marcus Rashford struck the post before halftime, and Kobbie Mainoo also rattled the frame of the goal in the second half.
However, City resiliently held firm, and their breakthrough arrived in the 60th minute. Haaland skillfully steered the ball home from a tight angle. The goal was initially flagged for offside, but a lengthy VAR review ultimately overturned the decision. Replays clearly showed that a defender’s outstretched foot kept the prolific Norwegian onside, validating the goal.
This hard-fought win sees Manchester City move up to second place in the league table with 12 points from their opening four matches. They trail league leaders Arsenal only on goal difference. In contrast, Manchester United remains in 13th position, having accumulated four points from their initial four games.
