During a BRICS summit held in New Delhi, President Xi Jinping advocated for the bloc to assume a significant role in mediating peace in the Middle East. He stated that the ongoing conflict in the region is detrimental to the collective interests of the international community.
Xi further elaborated that China is committed to working alongside its BRICS partners to achieve peace. State-run CCTV reported his remarks, highlighting the bloc’s potential to influence global stability.
The BRICS group, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has recently expanded to incorporate Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. This expanded coalition represents a substantial portion of the global population and economy.
Established in 2009, BRICS was conceived as a counterweight to the international order largely shaped by the United States and its Western allies. The group aims to foster greater representation for emerging economies on the world stage.
President Xi also described BRICS as a “leading group” for the Global South, promoting a model of self-sufficiency and innovation among developing nations. He announced that China will take over the BRICS chairmanship in the upcoming year, and will host the 19th BRICS summit.
