President Xi Jinping of China has landed in India’s capital, New Delhi, to attend the BRICS summit and engage in discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The arrival was broadcast on Indian television channels.
This visit marks a significant moment, as it is Xi’s first trip to India in seven years. The timing is particularly sensitive, given that relations between the two neighboring Asian powers have been cautiously rebuilding after a severe deterioration following a military confrontation in the disputed Himalayan border region in 2020. That clash resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers and four Chinese personnel.
Upon his arrival, President Xi was greeted with a red carpet and traditional Indian dances, signaling a formal welcome. He is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Modi later on Saturday evening. According to a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, this will be the third meeting between the two leaders in three years.
The Chinese foreign ministry has indicated a willingness to collaborate with India, advocating for a strategic and long-term view of their bilateral relationship. The spokesperson emphasized the importance of managing disagreements effectively and fostering a relationship based on being “good neighbours and friends, as well as mutually supportive partners.”
The BRICS group comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, with recent expansions including Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. The current summit is taking place against a backdrop of considerable global geopolitical instability, including the conflict involving Iran, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the subsequent disruptions to international energy, trade, and transport systems.
