Tooro Kingdom Mourns King Oyo, Faces Succession Dispute Ahead of Burial

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who ascended to the Tooro Kingdom throne at the tender age of three in 1995, passed away last month at 34 years old following a battle with cancer in the United States. His early coronation, which garnered international attention, established him as the youngest reigning monarch globally.
Thousands of mourners have gathered in Fort Portal, the kingdom’s capital, to pay their respects to the late king, who will be interred on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the royal tombs. The burial ceremony is set to include traditional rituals led by the Omusuna, the chief priest responsible for interring Tooro monarchs.
However, the late king’s passing has triggered a significant succession dispute. A faction of the royal clan has named Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a news anchor and editor, as the next king. Conversely, King Oyo’s immediate family claims a son, previously unknown, should inherit the throne as per the late king’s will. This familial claim has been met with skepticism, with critics questioning the lack of verifiable evidence, such as a photograph of the alleged heir or details about his mother.
The ensuing conflict threatened to delay the burial, as the installation of a new monarch is crucial for a key ritual during the ceremony. Reports indicate that national authorities have intervened, reportedly facilitating Kijanangoma’s succession. The Ugandan military has increased security presence in the region to maintain order.
King Oyo had a notable reign, serving as a UN goodwill ambassador against HIV/AIDS and fostering ties with former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. He will inherit a significant royal estate, including land and government financial support, with the successor facing the challenge of unifying the kingdom amidst the ongoing dispute. The chosen successor, Kijanangoma, has been described by colleagues as a humble and private individual.
