Tooro Kingdom Appoints Prince Kiijanangoma as Successor to Late King Oyo

The Tooro Kingdom has officially announced its new monarch following the passing of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. The Omusuuga of Tooro, Charles Kamurasi, revealed that the Babiito clan’s supreme council has selected Prince David Edward Rukidi Kiijanangoma as the successor.

“I want to inform you, the people of Tooro and Uganda at large, that we have a King. We sat down and agreed on one thing: the King is Prince Edward Rukidi Kiijanangoma,” stated Omusuuga Kamurasi during a gathering at St. John’s Cathedral. He emphasized that the decision was made in accordance with both Ugandan laws and Tooro’s cultural practices.

Prince Kiijanangoma, a son of the late Prince Cox Rwamwanja, is a prominent member of the Royal Babiito Clan and is considered a senior prince eligible for the throne according to Tooro customs.

This declaration marks the initial phase of the succession process. Tradition dictates that Prince Kiijanangoma will subsequently be presented to clan elders and Queen Mother Best Kemigisa. He will also undergo the necessary traditional rituals before his formal enthronement.

The announcement occurs amidst reports of internal divisions within the royal family regarding the succession, with some factions reportedly backing a different prince. President Yoweri Museveni has urged the Batooro to address the succession issue peacefully and lawfully, prioritizing unity.

Karuzika Palace has not yet set a date for the enthronement or coronation ceremony of the new Omukama.
