President Yoweri Museveni has urged the people of Tooro Kingdom to find a peaceful and lawful resolution to the disagreements surrounding the succession of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. The President’s message was conveyed by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament during the burial ceremony of King Oyo at the Karambi Royal Tombs in Fort Portal.
The appeal comes at a critical juncture for the Tooro Kingdom, which is navigating the complex process of identifying the next monarch. The late King Oyo’s final send-off, unusually held in the evening, marked the beginning of a new chapter for the kingdom.
Discussions and differing opinions about the royal succession have emerged following the passing of King Oyo. While Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma has been announced as the successor, the process has not been without contention, with various elders and factions within the kingdom reportedly having their say.
During the burial, the focus was on honoring the memory of King Oyo, remembered for his gentleness, humility, and dignity. His passing has brought the succession issue to the forefront, highlighting the cultural and traditional significance of the Tooro monarchy. The royal family, including Princess Ruth and Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, has been grappling with the loss, with some members choosing to refrain from discussing the succession dispute publicly at this sensitive time.
The path forward for Tooro Kingdom hinges on its ability to address these succession challenges with unity and respect for its traditions and laws. The President’s call for peace underscores the importance of maintaining stability within the kingdom during this period of transition.
