Museveni Pledges Government Cooperation with New Tooro King

President Yoweri Museveni has assured the Tooro Kingdom that the government stands ready to work with the successor to the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, following the resolution of the ongoing succession process. This commitment was conveyed by Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, during the final send-off ceremony for King Oyo at St. John’s Cathedral.

Museveni’s message emphasized that once the selection of a new king is settled, the government will engage with the new monarch in a manner consistent with its previous relationship with King Oyo. “When the issue of the new King of the Batooro is solved, we shall be happy to work with the King as we did with His Highness Oyo,” the President stated.

He further appealed to the people of Tooro to address the current succession dispute through peaceful and lawful means. The President stressed the importance of prioritizing unity over division within the kingdom.

Reminding cultural institutions of their primary mandate since their restoration in 1993, Museveni highlighted their role in promoting and preserving culture. He advised cultural leaders to concentrate on safeguarding indigenous languages, customs, and traditions, which are increasingly at risk in a modernizing society, rather than engaging in political activities. Additionally, he urged these institutions to mobilize their subjects towards wealth creation and economic transformation.

During the burial ceremony, President Museveni also took the opportunity to advocate for a robust national campaign against cancer and other preventable diseases. He called on Ugandans to take personal responsibility for their health and encouraged healthcare professionals to provide clear guidance on disease prevention. Citing risk factors such as alcohol consumption, smoking, aflatoxins, contaminated food, pollution, and HPV, he asserted that maintaining good health is a facet of patriotism.
