Mukono District Chairperson Francis Lukooya Mukoome has expressed strong disapproval of district officials who allegedly frustrate or delay government projects. During a recent accountability baraza, Mukoome highlighted that some public servants are suspected of diverting funds meant for essential services and even shielding those involved in corrupt practices.
“We must stop diverting funds meant for the people and covering up for those responsible,” Mukoome stated, underscoring his administration’s commitment to good governance. He cited a specific instance where a medical worker at Mukono General Hospital was dismissed after allegedly demanding money from a patient for a necessary operation.
The chairperson stressed that corruption within public institutions directly impacts ordinary citizens by depriving them of the services the government allocates resources for. He called for greater collaboration between civil servants, political leaders, and the community to ensure government programs are implemented effectively and reach their intended beneficiaries.
Mukoome also pointed to his administration’s achievements in its first 100 days, including the rehabilitation of 234 kilometers of roads. He mentioned ongoing efforts to improve education by tackling teacher absenteeism and to bolster healthcare services. Health authorities are reportedly cracking down on misconduct and lack of transparency among medical staff, with investigations promised for any misconduct.
Further emphasizing the need for oversight, Hajjat Fatumah Ndisaba Nabitaka, the Presidential Deputy in Mukono, commended ongoing development projects in the district. She urged politicians to actively monitor these projects and report any shortcomings, warning that a lack of vigilance could erode public trust in the government. This accountability meeting occurs as Mukoome faces a legal challenge regarding his election as district chairperson, with a court hearing scheduled for September 15, 2026.
