Kitagwenda District Invests Shs50 Million in New Water Project for Kinyamugara Parish

Residents of Kinyamugara Parish in Kitagwenda District are set to benefit from a significant new water project, funded with Shs50 million, designed to tackle long-standing water access challenges.

The initiative, which commenced with the construction of a production borehole, is expected to serve more than eight villages within the parish. This development is a direct response to the struggles faced by locals, who have historically walked considerable distances, often up to two kilometers, to access water from unprotected wells.

Local leaders highlighted that the reliance on unsafe and distant water sources has contributed to a high incidence of waterborne diseases in the community. “Our people have been struggling to access clean and safe water, and this has exposed them to waterborne diseases,” stated Everlyne Kanyesigye, the district councillor for Kicheche Sub-county. She expressed optimism that the new project will significantly improve residents’ health and daily lives by providing a reliable water source closer to their homes.

Peter Sseremba, the Kitagwenda District Water Officer, noted that the project’s design includes provisions for future expansion to reach additional underserved communities. “In the future, we plan to upgrade the project so that it can extend services to other underserved villages,” Sseremba explained.

District Chairperson Ephrance Kenyonyozi urged the community to take ownership of the new facility, emphasizing the importance of proper usage and maintenance. She also stressed the need for improved hygiene and sanitation practices to maximize the health benefits derived from increased access to clean water.

Authorities have also called on the contractor to ensure high-quality construction, aiming for a sustainable water source that will benefit the community for years to come. The project is particularly significant given that safe water coverage in the district varies, with some sub-counties like Kicheche having coverage as low as 62%, while the district average stands at 87%.

This new water project is anticipated to play a crucial role in bridging the remaining gap in water access and improving public health outcomes in Kinyamugara Parish.
