Thirty-one years ago today, on September 12, 1995, a momentous occasion unfolded at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal as Prince Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV was crowned the Omukama of Tooro. His ascension followed the untimely death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. Born on April 16, 1992, Prince Oyo was merely three years and four months old at the time of his father’s passing.
Oyo’s coronation took place in the context of the restoration of Uganda’s traditional kingdoms, which had been abolished in 1967 and regained constitutional recognition in 1993. Following Tooro tradition, elders of the Babiito royal clan selected the young prince as heir. He adopted the regnal name Rukidi IV, a tribute to his grandfather.
The coronation ceremony was steeped in tradition, beginning before dawn with the revival of the monarchy’s symbols, including the revered Nyalebe royal drum and spears. Crowds filled the streets of Fort Portal, anticipating the arrival of their new king. The young prince was ceremonially carried to the palace gates, where a symbolic mock battle underscored the monarch’s duty to protect his people.
Inside the palace, Oyo participated in key accession rituals, including touching a traditional axe and striking the royal drum multiple times before being crowned and served his first royal meal. His young age at the time earned him a place in the Guinness World Records as the world’s youngest reigning monarch.
Due to his age, a council of regents, including Queen Mother Best Kemigisa and Princess Elizabeth Bagaaya, governed the kingdom during his early years. President Museveni was appointed as an official guardian. Oyo assumed full royal duties upon turning 18 in April 2010, focusing his adult reign on youth empowerment, education, health, and environmental conservation. He later became a UNAIDS Special Champion for HIV/AIDS awareness and championed initiatives like the restoration of River Mpanga and the Tooro Kingdom Vision 2045 plan.
King Oyo’s reign concluded with his death in August 2026. Today, September 12, 2026, marks his burial, precisely 31 years after he first took the throne.
