The sacred Karambi Royal Tombs in Fort Portal became the final resting place for Tooro’s King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV on Saturday, September 12, 2026, concluding an extraordinary 31-year reign.
This day held a poignant significance for the people of Tooro, as it was the very date 31 years prior that King Oyo ascended the throne as a three-year-old boy. What was once a day of celebration transformed into one of mourning.
King Oyo passed away at the age of 34 after battling cancer. His reign began at an age when he was too young to fully comprehend the responsibilities of the crown he inherited. His death brought an end to a unique chapter in Uganda’s traditional leadership.
Thousands of mourners, including cultural leaders, government officials, and members of the royal family, gathered in Fort Portal to bid farewell to a monarch who, from childhood, became a recognizable figure both within Uganda and internationally.
The funeral service commenced at St John’s Cathedral in Fort Portal before the procession made its solemn journey to Karambi, the traditional burial ground for Tooro kings. This procession was more than a funeral march; it was a symbolic send-off from a kingdom that had watched Oyo mature from a child king into a monarch who represented Tooro on the global stage.
At Karambi, known also as Amagasani, the burial ceremony adhered to traditional protocols reserved for a Tooro king, blending ancient customs with the preceding Christian service. The interment marked the formal conclusion of his reign, though discussions about the kingdom’s future leadership have emerged.
King Oyo’s life story was exceptional. Enthroned on September 12, 1995, he became one of the world’s youngest reigning monarchs, drawing global attention. Over his reign, he transitioned from the celebrated “boy king” to an adult monarch, playing a significant role in cultural preservation, tourism, and youth empowerment for the Tooro people. Though traditional kings in Uganda do not hold political power, Oyo served as a vital cultural symbol.
His burial on the same date he was crowned brought a sense of closure to a remarkable cycle. For generations of Batooro, September 12 will forever hold the memory of their king’s ascension and his return to his ancestors. King Oyo now rests among his royal predecessors at Karambi, his reign concluded, his story etched into the history of Tooro.
