Kabaka Mutebi Calls for Tooro Unity Amidst Succession Concerns

During a recent address read by his brother, Prince David Wasajja, the Kabaka of Buganda extended a message of solidarity and calm to the Tooro Kingdom. The message, delivered during the farewell ceremonies for the late Rukirabasaija Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru IV, highlighted the deep historical ties and brotherhood that have long existed between Buganda and Tooro, tracing back to 1830.

Prince Wasajja, representing the Buganda Kingdom, emphasized that this bond has historically seen shared responsibility in the upbringing of royal children from both realms. Kabaka Mutebi’s core plea to the people and leaders of Tooro was to place the kingdom’s welfare at the forefront, particularly in light of emerging debates regarding the succession to the Tooro throne.

“The interests of Tooro Kingdom should supersede those of any individuals or groups,” the Kabaka stated in his message. He further expressed that while King Oyo is no longer physically present, his vision and aspirations for Tooro should be actively preserved by his subjects.

The Kabaka also reminisced about his personal role in the late King Oyo’s upbringing, noting his contribution to grooming the young king after his ascension to the throne at a tender age. Kabaka Mutebi encouraged the Tooro populace to maintain unity, composure, and faith as they mourn.

“Let all those who loved Oyo honour his memory through fortitude, dignity and commitment to the continued peace, stability and prosperity of Tooro,” he urged. The Kabaka concluded by emphasizing that honoring the late king’s legacy means safeguarding unity, peace, and stability, ensuring the kingdom’s interests remain paramount in all decisions.

This call for unity comes at a critical juncture for Tooro, as discussions surrounding the future leadership of the kingdom continue.
