Judiciary Gears Up for 346 Election Petition Hearings

The Ugandan Judiciary is preparing for an intensive period of legal scrutiny, with 346 election petitions scheduled for hearings across the nation. These cases, arising from the recent 2026 Parliamentary and Local Council elections, will be managed by a dedicated team of 100 judicial officers.
The High Court will be responsible for adjudicating 157 of these petitions, with 48 High Court judges assigned to the task. These cases will be heard in 30 High Court circuits and the Civil Division of the High Court.
Meanwhile, Chief Magistrates Courts will handle the remaining 189 petitions. A total of 52 Chief Magistrates have been deployed to preside over these matters in 26 Chief Magistrate Courts.
The Judiciary anticipates that the hearing process will span approximately two months, highlighting the significant volume of electoral disputes that have been filed. This extensive deployment of judicial resources underscores the commitment to resolving these petitions in a timely manner following the elections.
