India Elevates African Voice on Global Stage via G20 and BRICS

Africa is enjoying a heightened profile on the international stage, thanks to India’s concerted efforts to amplify the continent’s voice in major global economic groupings. Following India’s successful advocacy for the African Union’s permanent membership in the G20 in 2023, the AU has become a regular participant, including at the recent G20 Summit in Brazil.

Now, as India assumes the BRICS presidency, African nations and the AU are once again at the forefront. The BRICS bloc itself includes three African member states: South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia. Additionally, other African countries, such as Uganda and Nigeria, are attending as partner nations.

Uganda’s Vice President Jessica Alupo’s presence at the 18th BRICS Summit offers a direct channel for engagement with a group representing a significant portion of the global population and economy. However, the crucial question remains whether this increased visibility will translate into concrete influence and tangible gains for the African continent.

African policymakers and observers are tasked with exploring how platforms like BRICS can deliver practical advancements in areas critical to development, including trade, investment, technology transfer, infrastructure development, climate financing, and overall economic progress. India’s current BRICS chairmanship, with its focus on resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability, aims to position the bloc as a champion for the Global South.

The continent faces the challenge of transforming its presence in these high-level discussions into a meaningful impact on policy outcomes and developmental strategies. The journey from simply being present to having a decisive voice is the key test for Africa’s enhanced role in these global forums.
