Global Leaders Convene in New Delhi for 18th BRICS Summit

New Delhi is buzzing with activity as distinguished leaders from across the Global South begin to arrive for the highly anticipated 18th BRICS Summit. The summit is set to officially commence on Saturday, September 12th, bringing together nations to deliberate on critical global issues.

Among the prominent figures already in the Indian capital is Russian President Vladimir Putin. His presence signals a strong commitment from Russia to the BRICS agenda, which is expected to cover vital areas such as international trade, economic development, technological advancement, and fostering global cooperation.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is also in attendance, representing one of the key African nations within the BRICS bloc. His participation underscores Africa’s growing influence and engagement within the group. Other notable arrivals include Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, highlighting the diverse representation at this year’s gathering.

Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye is present, notably representing the African Union, further emphasizing the continental focus of the summit. Uganda is being represented by Vice President Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, who is attending on behalf of President Yoweri Museveni. Uganda, as a BRICS partner country, aims to leverage the summit to enhance its trade, investment, and economic cooperation with BRICS members and other participating nations.

The significant African representation, including BRICS members South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia, alongside partner countries and the African Union, suggests that African interests will be a central theme. Discussions are anticipated to revolve around development initiatives, infrastructure projects, climate action, and financial collaborations.

India, presiding over the summit this year, has set the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” aiming to guide the collective efforts of the member nations and partners toward a more stable and prosperous future.
