Fort Portal Gears Up for King Oyo's Final Farewell

Early Saturday morning, Fort Portal City buzzed with activity as residents and visitors gathered at St John’s Cathedral. The occasion marks the final rites for the beloved King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who recently passed away after a long reign on the Tooro throne.

By dawn, preparations at the cathedral were nearing completion. Service providers and key personnel were in place, and by 6:00 AM, the first waves of mourners began arriving. These individuals represent a cross-section of society, united in their desire to pay their last respects and witness the solemn church service before the King’s interment.

The schedule outlines a poignant procession, with the King’s body set to depart Karuziika Palace at 8:15 AM, making its way to St John’s Cathedral for a 9:00 AM service. Dignitaries expected include government officials, fellow cultural and religious leaders, members of the royal family, and representatives from various cultural institutions, alongside thousands of mourners from across the Tooro region and beyond.

Following the service, the King’s earthly remains will be transported to the Karambi Royal Tombs for burial, where he will join his royal ancestors. Authorities have significantly increased security measures around the cathedral and along the procession route to ensure a safe and orderly event, anticipating the large crowds.
