The police in Luweero district have apprehended Oliver Nakabi, the former LC I chairperson of Kasaala village, for her alleged refusal to surrender the official village stamp.

Nakabi, who ran on the NRM ticket in the July 28 elections, secured third place with 87 votes. The victory went to independent candidate William Kayanja, who garnered 229 votes, followed by Denis Lubwama of NUP with 161 votes.

Following the elections, the Luweero Chief Administrative Officer had instructed all outgoing LC I chairpersons to hand over their official stamps to sub-county chiefs. These stamps were then to be transferred to the newly elected leaders.

Despite reminders and an ultimatum from the Luweero sub-county on September 3, Nakabi is accused of holding onto the Kasaala village stamp. She reportedly claims she was cheated in the election and disputes the legitimacy of the winner.

Savannah regional police spokesperson Sam Twineamazima confirmed that Nakabi, along with another former chairperson, John Ovon of Ndagabweya village, were reported for alleged illegal possession of government property. Nakabi’s failure to appear at the police station for questioning led to her arrest from her home.

She is currently detained at Kasana Police Station and faces charges related to the illegal possession of government stores. Nakabi has also lodged a petition with the Electoral Commission, alleging electoral malpractices. The commission is still reviewing petitions from 27 villages, which has temporarily halted the swearing-in ceremonies for newly elected LC I chairpersons in those areas.
