Brother Zamor Advocates for Ugandan Missionaries and Expanded Christian Education

Brother Hervé Zamor, the Superior General of the Brothers of Christian Instruction (also known as the Brothers of Christian Instruction of Ploërmel), has issued a call to action for the Ugandan branch of his religious order. He urges them to actively participate in missionary work and to further develop their educational programs.

Zamor’s own path to religious life was inspired by the dedication of missionaries he encountered during his youth in Haiti. He recalls being particularly moved by a Canadian Brother who served as his teacher. This early exposure to selfless service ignited a desire in Zamor to follow a similar path.

“I want to be like you. I want to become a brother,” Zamor told his teacher at the age of 12 or 13, marking the beginning of his vocational journey. He noted that at the time, most of the brothers he met were foreign missionaries, leading him to initially perceive religious life as an endeavor primarily for outsiders.

He completed the necessary stages of formation, including postulancy, a period of prayer and discernment. Upon completion, he took vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience. Zamor clarified that chastity is a commitment to remain available for Christ and the youth they serve, not a rejection of marriage. Obedience, he explained, involves listening and discerning God’s will, while poverty signifies communal sharing and ensuring a dignified life for all members, rather than destitution.

Brother Zamor’s message emphasizes a desire to see Ugandan members of his order take on a more prominent role in spreading Christian values through education, both within Uganda and potentially in other regions.
