The BRICS group of emerging economies has successfully negotiated a joint declaration during their summit in New Delhi, marking a significant diplomatic achievement. This consensus comes at a crucial time, with leaders aiming to bolster the bloc’s international influence amidst heightened geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East.
Host Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India emphasized that the bloc has “come of age” and should now translate its unity into tangible global outcomes. The summit faced the complex challenge of bridging differences between member nations Iran and the United Arab Emirates regarding the ongoing conflict in the Gulf. This diplomatic effort was further complicated by the resumption of strikes between the United States and Iran.
Negotiators worked to craft a declaration that, while likely avoiding specific country mentions, will condemn acts of unilateral aggression. This achievement follows a previous instance in May where BRICS foreign ministers were unable to issue a joint statement due to disagreements between Iran and the UAE.
Beyond the immediate Middle East crisis, the BRICS nations are collectively pushing for reforms in global financial institutions like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, which they perceive as Western-dominated. Prime Minister Modi also reiterated India’s long-standing call for an expansion of the UN Security Council, advocating for permanent seats for emerging powers.
“If our future is shared, then the right to shape that future must also be shared,” Modi stated, underscoring the bloc’s ambition for a more equitable global order. Leaders present included Vladimir Putin of Russia, Xi Jinping of China, Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran, Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, and representatives from the UAE, among others.
