Vice President Jessica Alupo has arrived in New Delhi, India, to attend the 18th BRICS Summit, where she will be representing President Yoweri Museveni. Her arrival signifies Uganda’s engagement with the increasingly influential bloc.
Upon her arrival at Indira Gandhi International Airport, the Vice President was welcomed by Jayant Chaudhary, India’s Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. She is accompanied by Minister of State in the Office of the Vice President, Diana Nankunda Mutasingwa, and other high-ranking government officials.
Uganda is participating in this year’s summit as one of ten partner countries. The primary objective for Uganda is to deepen its trade, investment, and strategic economic cooperation with BRICS member states and other partner nations. This participation is seen as a crucial step for Uganda to expand its economic and diplomatic ties beyond traditional markets and strengthen its relationships with emerging global economic powers.
The 18th BRICS Summit, hosted by India under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” will focus on key areas such as development, trade, finance, technology, sustainability, and cooperation among countries of the Global South. The expanded BRICS group, now comprising 11 member states and 10 partner countries, represents a significant portion of the world’s population and economic output.
For Uganda, this summit offers a vital opportunity to translate its new partnership with BRICS into tangible economic benefits, particularly in the sectors of trade, investment, technology, infrastructure, and development cooperation. The nation is keen to explore concrete economic opportunities arising from this expanded global network.
