Uganda and Nordic Nations Forge Partnership to Boost Creative Economy

Uganda is strengthening its ties with Nordic countries to unlock the full potential of its creative economy. The Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, Faith Mercy Lakisa, highlighted the government’s dedication to investing in this vital sector, which is increasingly recognized as a significant driver of economic development and job creation.

During the Nordic-Uganda Partnership Day held in Kampala, Minister Lakisa emphasized that creative arts have evolved from mere cultural expression into a crucial socio-economic force capable of fostering innovation. She stated, “Investing in young people and their creative capabilities is ultimately an investment in mutual prosperity.”

The event, initiated by the Embassies of Denmark, Sweden, and Iceland, focused on youth engagement, cultural exchange, creativity, and innovation. It brought together artists, innovators, policymakers, and cultural leaders to showcase the talent of Uganda’s youth and their role in national development.

While the Nordic countries have successfully transformed their creative sectors into global brands, Uganda faces systemic challenges such as informality, policy gaps, and limited access to capital. However, Minister Lakisa assured that the government is committed to establishing enabling policy frameworks, protecting intellectual property, and expanding infrastructure to support young creatives. This financial year, Shs33 billion has been allocated to establish a revolving fund for the sector.

Ambassadors from Sweden, Denmark, and Iceland underscored the importance of creative industries in generating jobs and driving innovation globally. They stressed that environments fostering freedom of expression and open dialogue are crucial for both societal and entrepreneurial growth. The partnership is built on mutual trust and a shared belief in human capacity, aiming to empower young Ugandans to build sustainable livelihoods and contribute to the nation’s prosperity.
