Tooro Succession Dispute: Custom, Law, and Competing Claims Collide

The Tooro Kingdom is facing a renewed succession crisis following the announcement of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the heir to the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. The late king passed away on August 27th in the United States.

This development has brought to the forefront a long-standing dilemma for traditional institutions: how to reconcile royal customs, the desires of a deceased monarch, and conflicting claims to the throne.

A 21-member Royal Succession Committee officially declared Prince Kijanangoma as the successor, but the announcement has not settled the matter, indicating a deeper conflict within the royal family.
