A driver has been arrested in connection with a tragic road accident that claimed two lives and left nine others injured along the Kampala-Hoima Road in Wakiso District. The crash occurred on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, when a Sino truck, identified as registration UBK 495F, reportedly lost control.
The truck, which was carrying stones and travelling from Kakiri towards Kampala, collided with multiple vehicles, including a commuter taxi that had stopped to pick up passengers. The taxi, a Toyota Hiace with registration UAT 272J, was struck forcefully, along with a Subaru Forester (UBB 353D) and a Toyota Wish (UBE 918T).
The driver and conductor of the commuter taxi sustained fatal injuries at the scene. Nine passengers, comprising five adults and four children, were injured and transported to a local health facility for medical attention.
Police Traffic spokesperson Michael Kananura confirmed the arrest of the truck driver, Peter Wasswa, on Friday. Wasswa is currently in police custody and is expected to face charges related to the incident in court.
Authorities are using this incident to remind all road users of the importance of exercising caution, adhering to speed limits, and maintaining full control of their vehicles to prevent future tragedies.
