Security Tightens, Traffic Diverted for King Oyo's Burial

As the Tooro Kingdom prepares to lay to rest His Majesty Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukiidi IV, a comprehensive security plan has been put in place to ensure a smooth and safe burial ceremony scheduled for Saturday, September 12, 2026. The joint security team, led by the Uganda Police, has issued detailed traffic guidelines that will affect movement in and around Fort Portal City.

Police Spokesperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma stated that the event is expected to draw a large number of dignitaries, including members of the Royal Family, cultural and religious leaders, and government officials. To manage the anticipated crowds and ensure the safety of all attendees, stringent security measures have been implemented. These include the establishment of clearly marked security zones and access-control points around Karuziika Palace, St. John’s Cathedral Church of Uganda, and the burial site in Karambi.

Motorists are advised to expect heightened police presence along key routes and potential temporary diversions. Designated parking areas, such as Buhinga Stadium and Kabarole Hospital parking, will be available. However, parking along roads and near entrances/exits will be strictly prohibited to maintain clear emergency lanes. Some roads, including Kibogo Road and stretches near Maguru, Virika, Kasusu Junctions, and the Kachwamba area, will face restrictions or closures based on operational needs.

Beyond traffic management, the security forces are urging the public to cooperate with screening procedures, avoid bringing prohibited items, and report any suspicious activity. Medical response teams will be on standby, and individuals with pre-existing conditions are encouraged to take necessary precautions. Media personnel covering the event are required to have accreditation from the Uganda Media Centre.
