New Delhi Hosts Pivotal BRICS Summit Amid Expansion and Global South Focus

New Delhi is abuzz with preparations for the 18th BRICS Summit, a significant diplomatic event bringing together leaders from across the Global South. Scheduled for September 12-13 at Bharat Mandapam, the summit takes place under India’s chairmanship, themed “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”

This theme signals India’s ambition to steer BRICS beyond political rhetoric towards tangible collaboration in crucial areas such as technology, agriculture, energy security, and development. India has reported over 350 related meetings and engagements during its chairmanship, spanning political, economic, and cultural exchanges.

The BRICS bloc, which has expanded from its original five members to eleven, now includes major economies like Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. This expanded grouping represents a substantial portion of the global population, GDP, and trade, amplifying its influence on the world stage.

However, the expansion also introduces geopolitical complexities, with member nations holding diverse economic interests and foreign policy priorities. International issues like ongoing conflicts and global trade disruptions will likely cast a shadow over discussions.

Uganda, a Partner Country since January 2025, views the summit as a key opportunity to foster investment, technological partnerships, market access, and development cooperation. The Ugandan delegation is led by Vice President Jessica Alupo.

Beyond geopolitical considerations, India is prioritizing development-focused initiatives, including proposals for enhanced digital agriculture, renewable energy, and improved cross-border payment systems. The summit’s success may hinge on its ability to translate the bloc’s growing economic power into concrete benefits for developing nations.
