Modi, Putin Vow to Deepen India-Russia Strategic Ties Ahead of BRICS Summit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held significant discussions on Friday, agreeing to further solidify the robust relationship between their countries. The meeting, which took place in New Delhi on the eve of the BRICS summit, focused on enhancing cooperation in key sectors such as energy and defense.

Both leaders shared perspectives on the ongoing conflicts in West Asia and the Black Sea region, acknowledging their detrimental impact on global maritime trade and the safety of Indian seafarers. Prime Minister Modi underscored India’s stance that conflicts should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, reiterating the nation’s readiness to contribute to peace efforts.

India and Russia share strong energy ties, with India being a major importer of Russian oil. This trade is crucial for Russia’s budget and helps India secure vital energy supplies for its large population and economy. Despite Western sanctions on Russia, India has maintained its trade relations, emphasizing the need for reliable energy sources.

During their meeting, Prime Minister Modi presented President Putin with a Russian translation of the Thirukkural, a classic Tamil text. The two leaders also visited an industrial exhibition highlighting advancements in technology, AI, aviation, space, nuclear science, and other fields of mutual interest.

The bilateral discussions also touched upon the ambition to significantly increase trade between India and Russia, aiming for $100 billion by 2030, up from approximately $70 billion in 2024-25.

This meeting occurred as India navigates a complex geopolitical landscape, striving to maintain relationships with diverse global powers while mitigating the effects of international conflicts on its trade. The BRICS summit is set to convene with leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and Iran, among others.
