Kakinga Dam: A vital water source and economic hub for Sembabule

Kakinga Dam, a vast water body in Sembabule District, continues to be a lifeline for the local community and an estimated 2,500 animals, particularly during prolonged dry spells when other water sources diminish.
Originally built in 1959 by the Kabaka of Buganda, Sir Edward Mutesa II, the dam serves over 60,000 households, providing water for both livestock and domestic use. Its immense size allows it to retain water even when other dams have run dry, attracting herdsmen from neighboring areas who often travel over 35 kilometers to access its resources during dry seasons.
Local leaders are advocating for the dam’s rehabilitation, including desilting, to restore its capacity and extend its lifespan. The dam currently supplies water to the sub-counties of Nabitanga, Ntusi, and Mitima. However, sections of the dam are reportedly being encroached upon by water hyacinth weeds.
Beyond its primary function, Kakinga Dam’s scenic beauty has sparked interest in its potential as a tourist attraction. Its proximity to the Bigo Bayu Muganyi national cultural site could further enhance its appeal. Local businessmen envision the development of hotels to cater to tourists visiting the dam, which has sustained the region’s livestock farming for over six decades.
Conservationists emphasize the need for a deliberate approach to protect Kakinga Dam from the impacts of climate change. They suggest planting trees and protecting water catchment areas, alongside constructing additional valley dams to reduce over-reliance on Kakinga. Some residents also utilize the deeper sections for recreational boat rides.
District officials note that the dam has not undergone significant rehabilitation in over 20 years, with the last major works occurring in 2007. Urgent needs include replacing the principal spillway and expanding sediment storage to ensure its continued viability.
