Inaki Williams Calls Time on Ghana International Career

Inaki Williams, the captain of Athletic Bilbao, has officially ended his international football journey with Ghana. The forward shared his decision on social media on Friday, marking the conclusion of a four-year tenure with the Black Stars.

Williams’ final match for Ghana was the recent World Cup fixture against Colombia, a game that saw the Black Stars eliminated. Born in Bilbao to Ghanaian parents, Williams made the significant decision to switch his national allegiance to Ghana in 2022. This move came after he had already represented Spain once in a friendly match six years prior.

During his time with the Ghanaian national team, Williams featured in 28 games, scoring two goals. He was a key player in Ghana’s campaign, helping them to reach the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time since 2010.

“Ghana has given me much more than football,” Williams stated in his announcement. “It has allowed me to come back home, feel even closer to my roots and experience the enormous pride of representing my country and wearing this flag on my chest. Ghana will always be a part of me.”

Williams’ younger brother, Nico Williams, was notably part of the Spanish squad that clinched the World Cup title this year.
