Government Urged to Partner with Universities for Girl Child Education Support

There’s a growing call for the Ugandan government to forge stronger partnerships with universities that are actively supporting female students struggling with financial challenges that impede their education. Dilidha Musa, Executive Director of Green Horizons Environmental Research Initiative Uganda, made this appeal during an event at the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU).
Musa emphasized the importance of such collaborations, especially in light of IUIU’s “Run for a Girl Child” initiative. This annual fundraising event, now in its fifth edition, is dedicated to securing tuition support for underprivileged female students under the theme “We Run, She Learns.”
Musa’s personal contribution, which included purchasing T-shirts for the charity run, was motivated by his recognition of the significant hurdles girls face when their education is jeopardized by financial difficulties. “I could not just sit back when there are girls who need support to pay tuition,” he stated, underscoring the need for intervention.
Investing in the education of girls is seen as a critical step towards improving their future prospects and contributing to Uganda’s broader social and economic development. IUIU Guild President Sophia Lubwama highlighted the program’s success, noting that it has already assisted 345 students since its inception.
However, Lubwama pointed out that financial constraints, particularly for costly professional courses like medicine and law, continue to force some students to abandon their studies. The “Run for a Girl Child” aims to mitigate this by encouraging wider public support. “When you educate a girl child, you are educating the nation,” Lubwama remarked, rallying support for the cause.
The upcoming charity run invites individuals and organizations to contribute by purchasing running kits or making direct financial donations to help these deserving students complete their academic journeys. The event is scheduled to take place later this month.
