Buliisa Residents Allege Health Impacts and Property Damage from Indian-Linked Company's Blasting

Residents of three villages in Biiso Sub-county, Buliisa District, have voiced severe concerns regarding the stone blasting operations conducted by Gasham Limited Services, a company reportedly operating on behalf of an Indian investor. The community claims these activities, which began after the completion of the Masindi-Biiso Road construction, have led to significant damage to their homes, the death of domestic animals, and the destruction of crops.

According to locals, the company, which took over a stone quarry previously used for the road project, rarely notifies residents before conducting blasting. The intensity of the explosions, described by one resident as sounding “like a bomb,” has reportedly caused cracks in houses and contaminated water sources. Some residents are so fearful of the blasts that they avoid staying in their homes during the operations.

Beyond property damage, residents allege that the blasting has had serious health implications, including miscarriages among pregnant women and hearing problems in newborns. Attempts to address these issues with the company have allegedly been met with dismissiveness, with some company representatives reportedly invoking strong connections to government officials.

Local leaders have also found it challenging to mediate. The village chairman of Akimi B, Charles Owinyi, stated that company representatives often fail to attend community meetings. He expressed frustration, noting the constant dust from heavy vehicle traffic and the unresponsiveness of the company.

However, Buliisa County Member of Parliament Alan Atugonza has acknowledged the residents’ plight and plans to coordinate with other local leaders to find a resolution that balances the interests of the community and the investor. When reached for comment, the company manager, Patel Jagadishi, denied the allegations, stating the company maintains good relations with local leaders and has a system for addressing grievances.

Despite the company’s denial, residents continue to call for greater oversight of blasting activities, compensation for damages, and improved communication from the company. They feel their homes and livelihoods are at risk and are seeking urgent action from authorities.
