Arteta's Arsenal: Prepared for Anything, No Excuses

Mikel Arteta has cultivated a unique culture at Arsenal, where leaving nothing to chance is paramount. Even playing opposition stadium anthems through speakers at the training ground is part of his strategy to prepare his squad for every eventuality.

This meticulous approach means that minor disruptions, such as a flight delay experienced en route to a Champions League match, are not cause for alarm. Arteta views these challenges as opportunities to reinforce his team’s adaptability. “I love these challenges,” Arteta stated, explaining his practice of simulating such disruptions during pre-season. “I try to create them in pre-season and arrive at different times so when they happen we have already experienced it.”

He emphasizes that the goal is not for players or staff to panic but to adapt seamlessly. “You can miss a flight, the train can be delayed but I don’t want the players or staff to be panicking when it happens, instead adapt to it. But do not complain and use it as an excuse because it’s not helpful at all,” he added.

This mindset is crucial as Arsenal prepare to face Sunderland, a team that previously snatched points late in a fixture last season. Arteta engineers disruptions in training, such as delaying meals or transport, altering routes, or making dressing rooms uncomfortable, to eliminate any element of surprise on match day. The manager even uses a 150-year-old olive tree as a symbol of nurturing the club’s foundations.

Arsenal is aiming for a fourth consecutive Premier League win, a feat that historically precedes title victories. Having learned from last season’s draw against Sunderland, Arteta’s team is being primed to handle any scenario without resorting to excuses.
