Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has reported disrupting several attempts by malicious actors to leverage its AI models for harmful purposes, including the development of biological weapons. The company detailed these findings in its latest threat intelligence report, underscoring the increasing risks associated with advanced AI.

According to Anthropic, they have blocked scientists who attempted to use their AI in ways that could facilitate the creation of biological weapons. The report specifically highlighted “five case studies of actors using our models in ways that could support biological weapons development,” labeling such misuse as “one of the most serious risks of frontier AI models.”

Anthropic’s report covers a period from December 2025 to August 2026, during which various malicious activities were detected and prevented. These included cyber espionage campaigns linked to Russia, propaganda efforts by an Iranian institution, fake dating apps, hotel Wi-Fi scams, and surveillance tools designed to identify dissidents. The company also accused Chinese AI firms of attempting to replicate its AI capabilities.

While the misuse of Anthropic’s Claude Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus models was disrupted, the report noted that the misuse did not involve their more advanced Claude Fable or Mythos-class models, with a single exception related to AI model distillation. The report emphasizes the critical need for robust safeguards, as the same information that could be used to create dangerous weapons could also be applied to beneficial purposes, such as developing vaccines or cures.

This revelation comes amid broader discussions about AI safety. US Senator Bernie Sanders has called for a pause in advanced AI development and a ban on artificial superintelligence, contrasting with President Donald Trump’s view that maintaining AI leadership is crucial for national security. Google also recently reported an attempt to use its AI tool, Gemini, to generate a guide for synthesizing weaponized biological agents.
