Algeria Cuts Diplomatic Ties with UAE Over "Hostile Acts"

Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declared an immediate severance of diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, attributing the drastic measure to “provocative or hostile” conduct by the UAE. The ministry stated that all avenues to resolve the issues had been exhausted.

While the specific reasons behind the decision were not detailed, diplomatic sources suggest a pattern of escalating tensions between the two nations over various regional conflicts. The Algerian statement indicated that the UAE’s behaviour had crossed a threshold, making the continuation of diplomatic ties untenable.

The UAE has not issued a direct response to the announcement. However, an advisor to the UAE president commented on the nature of diplomatic relations, emphasizing the importance of rationality, clear communication, and mutual interests, suggesting that ambiguity and “noise” are not conducive to effective diplomacy.

Algerian officials summoned the UAE ambassador to inform him of the decision, granting him 48 hours to depart the country. This move underscores the depth of the disagreement between Algiers and Abu Dhabi.

Relations have been particularly strained due to differing stances on key regional issues. Algeria strongly opposes the normalization of relations with Israel, a move embraced by the UAE and Morocco under the US-brokered Abraham Accords. Furthermore, the UAE’s support for Morocco’s claim over Western Sahara contrasts sharply with Algeria’s backing of the Polisario Front, which advocates for an independent Sahrawi state.

This diplomatic rupture signifies a significant escalation in regional divisions, highlighting the complex geopolitical landscape of the Middle East and North Africa.
