Women's football in Uganda learns financial discipline from Bank of Uganda official

The Women In Football Symposium, held at Skyz Hotel Naguru, brought together players, coaches, and administrators to discuss the future of women’s football in Uganda. A key highlight was a presentation by Pumla Nabachwa, Head of Economic Policy Communication at the Bank of Uganda, who shifted the focus from typical football development talks to essential financial literacy.
Nabachwa emphasized the importance of money management for female athletes, many of whom are entering a male-dominated industry. She provided practical advice on saving, budgeting, and investing, likening financial discipline to the dedication required on the football pitch. “Discipline on the pitch builds champions. Discipline with money builds freedom,” Nabachwa stated, urging attendees to set financial goals, create budgets, and build emergency funds.
Her session addressed common financial pitfalls such as lifestyle inflation, ‘black tax’ (supporting extended family), irregular income, and social pressures. Nabachwa encouraged women to plan for their post-playing careers by acquiring skills in coaching, business, and digital literacy.
The symposium also celebrated the growing support for women’s football, particularly from Finance Trust Bank (FTB). FTB sponsors the Fufa Women Super League and the Fufa Women Elite League, and has recently begun hiring players for positions within the bank, demonstrating a commitment to providing career opportunities beyond their playing days. Annet Nakawunde Mulindwa, MD of Finance Trust Bank, highlighted the success of this partnership with Fufa, which has significantly boosted the bank’s brand visibility.
Awards were presented to outstanding individuals, including Agnes Nabukenya (Best Player) and Ayub Khalifa (Best Coach), recognizing their contributions to the sport during the 2025/26 season. FIFA referee Shamirah Nabadda also received an Achiever award, acknowledging her role in officiating.
This initiative underscores a growing recognition of the need for holistic development in women’s football, combining athletic talent with crucial life skills like financial management. The event reinforced the message that success in football should be an inspiration for all, fostering a collaborative and gender-equal football family.
