Uganda Law Society Champions Digital Transformation in Legal Sector

The Uganda Law Society (ULS) is spearheading a significant push towards digital modernization within the nation’s legal profession, aiming to blend traditional legal practices with cutting-edge technology.

Anthony Asiimwe, Vice President of ULS, highlighted the transformative impact of digital systems, including paperless justice initiatives, artificial intelligence, and automated legal workflows. He stated that the upcoming TechFest is designed to help lawyers and the public overcome the digital gap.

“Technology has reshaped everything, so all legal practitioners should adopt to digital technology,” Asiimwe emphasized during the launch of the second TechFest. He cited the Electronic Court Case Management Information System (ECCMIS) as a prime example of technology’s role in enhancing justice delivery, asserting that “The future of the legal profession now is technology.”

Tony Galandi Kiire, Chairman of the Law Tech Festival and Managing Partner at Diamond Advocates, explained that the event was rebranded to better align with its focus on the legal sector and the urgent need for lawyers to embrace technological advancements. He also pointed out the challenge of relying on foreign technology in an African context.

“Most of the tools used now are foreign yet we are in an African setting which gives a challenge when administering justice,” Kiire noted. This year’s festival aims to foster the development and adoption of digital solutions tailored to the African continent.

The main TechFest event is scheduled for September 17-18 in Munyonyo, following a series of regional events in Mbarara, Gulu, and Mbale from September 14-16. These regional gatherings are intended to build momentum and facilitate discussions on digital transformation and the future of legal practice in Uganda among legal professionals and stakeholders.
