Uganda eyes economic growth at 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi

Uganda is set to enhance its economic and diplomatic relations on the global stage as Vice President Jessica Alupo leads the country’s delegation to the 18th BRICS Summit. The summit, hosted in New Delhi, India, from September 12-13, 2026, brings together nations under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.”

This event holds significant importance for Uganda, which officially became a partner state of BRICS on January 1, 2025. The grouping now includes eleven member and partner countries, collectively representing almost half of the world’s population and a substantial 40 percent of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

India, in its role as host, has emphasized an inclusive approach, aiming to integrate partner countries into various tracks of the summit. The Indian High Commissioner to Uganda, Mr. Upender Singh Rawat, highlighted that this engagement provides a crucial platform for Uganda to deepen its investment, technology partnerships, market access, and capacity-building initiatives.

Beyond the core economic discussions, Uganda will also showcase its rich cultural heritage. Musicians and artisans are participating in cultural events, including a performance titled “BRICS Symphony – One Rhythm, Many Cultures” and an exhibition of traditional handicrafts at the BRICS Bazaar.

The summit’s broader regional implications are underscored by the attendance of Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye, in his capacity as Chairperson of the African Union. Uganda’s participation signifies its commitment to leveraging international platforms for national development and expanded economic opportunities.
