Uganda Boosts Defence Ties with Denmark and Netherlands

Uganda is actively enhancing its defence relationships with European partners, Denmark and the Netherlands. Recent meetings at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs headquarters in Mbuya, Kampala, saw Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs, Huda Abason Oleru, holding separate dialogues with delegations from both nations.

The Danish delegation was led by Ketil Iversen Karlsen, Head of Department for Africa at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Discussions with Denmark centered on deepening bilateral defence cooperation and identifying shared interests.

Concurrently, Uganda’s envoy met with the Netherlands Ambassador to Uganda, Angèle Samura. During this engagement, Oleru acknowledged the Netherlands’ valuable technical support and specialized training in military law, including contributions to the Legal Training Centre in Jinja.

Both the Danish and Dutch delegations recognized and commended Uganda’s significant role in maintaining regional security and the contributions of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) to peace support operations.

Minister Oleru reiterated Uganda’s unwavering commitment to promoting peace and stability through African-led initiatives, emphasizing the nation’s dedication to the Pan-African framework for resolving continental challenges. These diplomatic engagements are part of Uganda’s broader strategy to foster robust military partnerships and advance cooperation on critical security and peace support matters.

The meetings were attended by senior UPDF officials, including Chief of Joint Staff Lt Gen Jack Bakasumba and Brig Gen Oscar Munanura, Deputy Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security.
