Tororo Hospital Seeks Upgrade to Regional Referral Status Amidst Hygiene Concerns

Staff at Tororo General Hospital are making a strong case for the facility to be upgraded to a regional referral hospital. The appeal was presented to members of Parliament’s Committee on Health during a recent oversight visit. Senior Nursing Officer Stella Agembi highlighted the hospital’s readiness for this upgrade, pointing to its existing infrastructure, equipment, and staffing levels, as well as ample space for future expansion.

Agembi emphasized that Tororo General Hospital serves a vast population, including individuals from five neighboring districts and parts of Kenya, potentially reaching over a million people. The current general hospital status limits its ability to provide specialized services, forcing many patients to travel long distances. The hospital possesses over 10 acres of land, providing ample opportunity for expansion necessary for a regional referral center.

Parliamentarians noted that Tororo General Hospital appeared better equipped and staffed than other general hospitals visited that week. They acknowledged the presence of diagnostic equipment and support from international development partners such as JICA, Baylor College of Medicine, and IDRC.

Despite these strengths, the committee expressed serious concerns regarding hygiene standards, especially within the maternity and outpatient wards. Deputy Chairperson Hon. Hope Nakazibwe urged the hospital to prioritize improving washroom facilities and maintaining daily cleanliness, suggesting the use of Primary Health Care funds for these enhancements.

MPs warned that poor hygiene could increase the risk of sepsis among patients, a life-threatening condition. They also advised against using formalin to disinfect the open placenta pit due to potential environmental and health hazards. During their visit, the committee also inspected Masafu General Hospital in Busia District, where they were disturbed by reports of excessive charges for mortuary services.

The committee has instructed local leadership at Masafu General Hospital to investigate the mortuary fee allegations and determine a course of action regarding service charges and fund remittance.
