Tooro Succession Dispute: Govt Urges Calm, Awaits Presidential Guidance

The Tooro Kingdom is facing a significant succession challenge following the passing of its monarch, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. The situation has been complicated by conflicting claims regarding the rightful heir.
In response to the growing uncertainty, Minister of State for Internal Affairs, Juma Witonze Kisekka, has appealed to the people of Tooro to maintain peace and refrain from actions that could disrupt the mourning period. Speaking at Karuziika Palace, the minister emphasized the need for patience.
“Please remain calm and keep peace. But as we are here struggling for the succession, can we please wait for the Chief Elder, and that is His Excellency the President, to guide on what is the next step,” Witonze stated.
The dispute intensified when the Babiito royal clan announced Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the new Omukama. However, this proclamation was quickly challenged by Princess Ruth Komutale and Queen Mother Best Kemigisa, who asserted that the late King Oyo had left a will designating a different heir and order of succession.
Minister Witonze assured the public that security agencies are on alert to prevent any attempts to cause chaos. He highlighted the importance of honoring King Oyo’s legacy and ensuring a dignified farewell for the late monarch, who he described as a crucial custodian of culture and a unifying symbol for Tooro.
The government views Tooro Kingdom as a vital partner in cultural preservation and national unity. Consultations are ongoing between the government, the royal family, and the kingdom’s leadership to navigate the succession crisis. The priority remains to manage the current period of mourning peacefully and respectfully.
