A significant rift has emerged within the Tooro Kingdom following the recent proclamation of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the successor to the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
The Babiito Royal Clan had announced Kijanangoma as the next in line to the throne. However, this decision was met with surprise and strong opposition from the late King’s own family.
Princess Ruth Nsemere Komuntale, sister to the late King Oyo, stated that the family was not consulted and was in the process of reviewing the late monarch’s Last Will and Testament with legal counsel. She expressed confusion and dismay at the premature announcement.
According to Komuntale, King Oyo’s will, dated September 14, 2022, clearly designates his biological son as the primary heir, provided certain customs and legal acts are adhered to. The will also reportedly outlines alternative successors, naming Prince Komwiswa Yoweri and Prince Nyaika Solomon as secondary and tertiary options, respectively.
Komuntale emphasized that the family had planned further discussions with lawyers before any official succession announcement, calling Kijanangoma’s proclamation hasty. She urged for a pause in the succession debate to allow the kingdom to mourn the late King peacefully.
Princess Elizabeth Bagaya has publicly backed Komuntale’s stance, lending her full support to her position on the matter. The unfolding dispute casts a shadow over the ongoing burial preparations for King Oyo, leaving the kingdom’s leadership transition uncertain.
