Second Hospitality Skills Challenge Kicks Off in Jinja Under 'Fusion of Culture' Theme

The second edition of the Hospitality Skills Challenge has officially commenced at the Hotel and Tourism Training College (HTTC) in Jinja. This three-day event has transformed the institution into a vibrant center for culinary arts, bringing together aspiring hospitality professionals, seasoned international chefs, judges, and industry experts.

Under the theme “Fusion of Culture,” this year’s competition highlights the dynamic integration of Africa’s rich culinary heritage with modern hospitality practices. The challenge features participants from various universities and institutions of higher learning competing across five key categories: Pastry and Bakery, Restaurant Service, Barista, Rooms Division, and Culinary Arts.

State Minister for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Susan Nakawuki, inaugurated the event, praising HTTC for its leadership in organizing the challenge. She emphasized that HTTC exemplifies excellence through hands-on training, strong industry collaborations, and continuous innovation, and commended the participating institutions for their commitment to elevating hospitality training standards in Uganda.

HTTC Principal Richard Kawere noted the college’s significant advancements since the first challenge, transitioning from makeshift facilities to state-of-the-art kitchens. He highlighted the strong employment rate of HTTC graduates, with a recent tracer study showing a 74.5% transition into employment, many securing jobs immediately or starting their own businesses.

Renowned hospitality entrepreneur and HTTC alumna Shira Ahabwe urged participants to elevate African cuisine globally by presenting traditional dishes with contemporary fine-dining techniques. The competition includes institutions like Kyambogo University and Kampala University, alongside international representation from countries such as Botswana, Kenya, and Nigeria, making it a significant pan-African gathering.

The competition will culminate with the announcement and awarding of winners on Friday, following the decisive stage on Thursday, which will be open to the public. This event serves as a crucial platform for skill development and the promotion of African gastronomy within the tourism sector.
