Rubanda District Invests Shs40 Million in Farm-to-Market Road

Authorities in Rubanda District have broken ground on a vital 9-kilometer road project, the Nyanamo–Rwaburaro–Kabaya–Mundeka–Mushunga–Nshanjare Road. This Shs40 million initiative is set to bridge the connection between Nshanjare Town Council and Muko Sub-county in Rubanda West.

The primary goal of this road construction is to bolster farm-to-market access for local farmers. Previously, the dilapidated state of the existing path led to significant costs and logistical challenges in transporting produce, often resulting in farmers receiving low prices for their crops.

District Engineer John Habimana highlighted that the poor road conditions had directly contributed to the exploitation of farmers. “Most of the money would be spent on carrying produce on the head to the main road,” Habimana explained, emphasizing how the new road will alleviate these burdens.

Local leaders, including Councillor Amos Byaruhanga and Mayor Bizimark Kobusheshe, welcomed the project, noting the severe difficulties residents faced, including challenges in accessing healthcare, with some patients previously carried on backs to reach medical facilities.

The project is expected to be completed within two weeks. Vice Chairperson Prossy Akampurira Kesaferi urged the District Engineer to closely supervise the work to ensure quality and timely completion. She also commended the community for their self-help efforts in clearing the land for the road and thanked farmers for donating land.

Resident District Commissioner Kyeyune Ssenyonjo called for responsible use of government resources by the machine operators and warned against misconduct like fuel theft or drinking on duty. He encouraged residents to report any irregularities and to take ownership of the road by participating in its maintenance and adopting improved farming practices.
